Depends on what you mean...For example, Teradata will perform a cyl-pack when certain conditions exist and this is similar to what happens during packdisk, albeit in a more limited scope (certainly, if you are routinely seeing cyl-packs routinely during normal operation then you might be over-due for a packdisk minimally, but this could also be a symptom that you have some extremely skewed data/transaction loose in the system). Generally a system wide packdisk or defrag is something that must be specifically requested. Because of the possible impact to the system, I think most would want to specifically control when/where these types of system management processes are run. It is possible to script the execution of these processes and hence one could schedule them to occur on some time driven, recurring basis. How often one may need to consider these actions is dependent on the system in question and a prior response intonated at some of the things you might check to give you an indication that the system might reap positive results from performing one or both of these administrative tasks....
