I am sure the suggestion was targeted at the OP but feeling guilty for my earlier overly optimistic (and untested) suggestion I have found one

If the conversion still *has* to be so painful, then I would rather stick with the "literals" version or apply the method in the thread
quoted above to the particular case the OP had in mind. And I hope it was a "particular" case if the solution had to be on the SQL level.
A more generic solution could be a UDF, I guess. Or the conversion outside of TD.
