You are correct.

The Sum, Average, etc. functions are only available when you select a column/block using the mouse.

The problem with using the keyboard is that you have to use the Shift key to select multiple cells with the keyboard. That would tell SQL Assistant to calculate the Standard Deviation rather than the Sum - with no way to calculate the Sum (No keys pressed), Avg (Alt key) or Variance (Ctrl key).

I could however override that functionality in this case and always display 'Sum' when you use the keyboard. (Future feature.)
