..... and if the columns from the separate parts of the UNION are a different datatype you get a 3654 (corresponding select list expressions are incompatible), as I've just found out from the UNION query that I happen to be writing. Probably a bit more obvious this one, but nevertheless true.

In this case as well as the 2616 error, CASTing the result is indeed the solution.
