Not at all. Without stats on the join index, it's very likely that the optimizer will over estimate the cost of a plan using the join
index. But, of course, I was assuming stats had already been collected on the base tables. I was also assuming the stats had been
intelligently collected. That is to say, statistics were collected on all columns that appear in the predicate of the query involved, not
just the PI.
Given that, it's silly to go to the trouble of building a join index without collecting stats on it. Think of it this way: if you
created a new secondary index, wouldn't you collect stats on it? Very close to the same thing with a join index.
