Dropping one or more index definitions is normally a fast operation. All Teradata does is move all the disk space allocated to the index blocks onto the free space list of the Cylinder and Master index structures. It uses the same techique to delete all the rows of a table. Both of these sould be much faster than dropping the table.

So, your request has probably not started dropping the index. My guess is that you are blocked by a lock on the table and your SQL is sitting there waiting and waiting. This is probably the reason that you cannot drop the table either.

Did you or anyone attempt a Fastload or Mload on this table that did not finish successfully?
