Victor Sokovin's previous "Non-Latin characters" append brought up an alarming question: How expensive is Unicode conversion in Teradata?

We are planning to change quite a few column definitions to use Unicode. Some of these are very critical such as web ids which was varchar(254). Is there any benchmark result for doing Unicode conversion? Will the cost be on the server side or on the client side? If it's on the client side, which client will cost the most and which is the least? How about ODBC applications?
