Thomas, Wrt your first comment, I was not referring to relational theory, but the actual database and how to get the best performance from it. Sorry for any confusion. I was starting to worry that my experience of updating Primary Indexes was so long ago (avoided ever since) that perhaps it no longer applied given the improvements to Update over the years, so I have just run a small test. I ran it 3 times and on average it took: 17 seconds to populate a new table with the updated PI value. 39 seconds to update the column using 'Update ...' Obviously I need to add time for a delete and table rename to the 17 seconds, say another 2 seconds. But even so, I think you will agree it is more performant to do avoid directly updating a PI column. Regards Keith.
