Tony, An 'idle' session is one which isn't doing anything right now. Consider a session which issues the following commands; begin transaction; sel * <...user goes for looooong lunch...> At this point the session is idle, but the lock is still there and will remain there until the transaction is ended. Depending on whether you're using Teradata or ANSI transaction semantics will change how you place/release locks, but the principle remains the same. Dave
