I guess you could wait for 5.1 which has UDF's, where in you could define your own IS_CASTABLE function - if an inbuilt function is already not provided by Teradata SQL.

A thought on the same line - wouldn't it be good if people came out with a library of such functions once UDF came into picture. This would make way for ready to use, off-the-shelf functions.
