Try:

activity_dt DATE NOT NULL FORMAT 'mm/dd/yyyy' DEFAULT DATE '0001-01-01'

It works for me. Note that the date in the default clause is in yyyy-mm-dd format.

By the way, internally, Teradata dates are stored as yyyymmdd - 19000000.

-18989899 + 19000000 = 00010101

Any date before January 1st, 1900 will have a negative number internally.
