Charlie:

The first thing that comes to my mind in regard to this reported remark would not have as much to do with the fact that some number of tables reside on the same disk. Instead, it would have to do with the fact that users access data out of tables. Hence, more tables(data) + more users + bigger disks = more head movement on a disk that can only do 1 I/O operation at a time.

That would be my initial stab at explaining what might have been the intent of this out of context, reported remark.
