We had a similar problem with the Version Column on my last job. It's defined as a SMALLINT - Every time we made a table change it incremented. This table is part of an Active Data Warehouse so we were dropping and recreating indicies every 15 minutes to deal with loads.

This caused the VERSION column to fill up past 32,767 and created a nasty error.
