1) One method I use is to read through the utility output with a Perl script to look for any error conditions and then act accordingly. If you also use any scheduling software for your jobs, they usually have the ability to send email or pages if a step fails.

2) Use system command. Example:

system "bteq 
        D:/Systemstats/Canary_Select_Out.txt";
