Subj:   Data Retention of System Log Tables

From:   Paul Ibberson

I am looking into ageing off old data from the system log tables held in DBC database: EventLog, SW_Event_Log, HW_Event_Log, AccLogTbl, etc. Our Eventlog table contains 40+ million rows for the last 7months of which we only really look at the last month at most. This table is archived as part of our weekly archive of DBC database. In total our system log tables account for 75GB of space in database DBC.

We are going to implement a data retention period of one month on these tables, moving anything upto 6 months old into a history database for analysis if necessary.

Has anybody done this type of thing before? Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of - apart from the table locks whilst deleting data? Does a process already exist to do this - macros, TD Manager, 3rd party tools?

Many Thanks for all your input.

Paul Ibberson
