| Can somebody tell me what are the focus areas of a data warehouse production support DBA when Teradata is used? Will the focus be
totally different than that of an application development DBA? To my knowledge an application development DBA concentrates on
"implementation of data model" issues, load schedules, capacity planning etc etc. | |
Speaking strictly from my own experience, I will say that the focus is pretty much the same: efficient implementation of the data
model (choice of primary index being a big factor in Teradata), taking backups, reviewing application code -- the same sort of thing you
would do for any application.
As for capacity, it's not so much planning as it is fighting the ever-present dragon of Bloat. Unfortunately, if your system is sized
correctly, there will be a fairly large amount of free space, and people tend to think it is available for anything they want to do; thus
you wind up with three or four copies of the same data for slightly different purposes. In my experience, this is the biggest difference
between warehousing and OLTP.
