Absolutely true. NCR and EMC disk prices are only remotely related to disk drive prices. I'm not being sarcastic, I'm stating a fact
when I say that high-end storage system vendors have distanced themselves from diskdrives to create a higher perceived value for their
product. They are selling storage solutions, including tons of software as well as the smart "hotels" that house the drives. It's partly a
marketing ploy to keep the price of their engineered products from collapsing like JBOD's do, but there is an element of reality to it. Keep
in mind, there is a lot of flexibility in the negotiated prices, too.
Besides, what's the real value of a few CD's of software? Same idea.
