Since the interpreted SQL becomes compiled code before it is applied against each row I couldn't say exactly how a CASE statement is translated. But since it is compiled code the overhead would be minimal I would think; however, assuming a sequential process is created, if the 1st comparison finds the majority of rows then it should save a few nanoseconds per row.
