This approach to identifying CPU and I/O utilization has been around for a long time and was occasionally used before the implementation of Account String Expansion (ASE). I would recommend using ASE over your approach. The primary advantages of ASE is that it's an existing and internally implemented subsystem, it has minimal system impact (a small fraction of your approach) and has reasonable controls over the information that you can gather. Although it's not perfect, you're going to find it very hard to improve upon. I strongly recommend that you review the Database Administration manual, chapter 5 and see if ASE isn't a better fit for what you're trying to accomplish.
