Subj:   Re: Max Spool Usage

From:   Jim Downey

Bob,

I think I have seen a lot of good suggestions to your question. I would like to point out another perspective to the one mentioned here and your response. Although you sound as if you are looking for the max spool used as of an instant in time. Is that really what you want?

For example suppose user#1 uses 100Gb spool at 9am and user#2 uses 100Gb at 11am. Even though the max at any one time was 100Gb today what if these users ran their query at the same time tomorrow? Wouldn't you need 200Gb yet you thought 100Gb was enough?

You responded to another suggestion by running sum(currentspool) every 10 minutes yet you seemed concerned with the impact to your system. I don't know how granular your analysis needs to be but suppose you zeroed your peak spool in the morning then at noon did a sum of peak spool. Then reset the spool to 0 and did your analysis at the end of the day. This would tell you the max spool needed during the morning and afternoon.

Jim
