Isn't it more likely, especially since defining a better index fixed the problem, that the machine was simply hot-AMPing? In that
situation, the majority of the work is being performed by a single AMP (or just a few AMPs) and the benefit of parallel processing is
completely lost. Compounding the performance penalty is the need to deal with hash synonyms and then finally, there's the impact of
duplicate row checks - at that point, it's a pretty minor issue.
