For what it's worth, I tried to create a table with over 350 columns and V2R4.01 would not let me. So I broke it up, created a large table then tried to ALTER the table adding on the rest of the columns and it still would not let me. So, I believe that 256 is still the limit. Had to create two tables with shared PI's - that will works well!
