Harish described functional regression testing. In other words, that the results produced are the same. I would also add performance regression testing to the process, making sure that the system resources used, and the response times, are about the same as well.

We just recently uncovered a minor performance bug when migrating from V2R3 to V2R4. The query would have produced the right results, but the response time and resources used would have been vastly increased. We uncovered this problem during "regression testing" on our test system.

NCR corrected the problem in less than a week. We should be applying the patch soon.
