Subj:   Re: Multiload question

From:   David Wellman

Frank,

The re-ordering etc that Pam is talking about is done on the client (in this case the mainframe) by the client portion of the Multiload processing.

Pam also talks about potential wasted data transmissions etc. There is potentially 'wasted' data being sent from the client to Teradata.

Remember that the data parcel that Multiload sends to Teradata includes every .FIELD in the LAYOUT definition (you can see this in part of the output - I think the printout from the DML TRANSACTION phase). When the LAYOUT includes redefinitions of input data, this means that the data effectively gets sent multiple times.

This is also the reason that (on a mainframe) you typically cannot redefine a character field or date field as packed decimal. For those input records where the incoming data is character/date etc, Multiload also tries to read it as packed decimal - this 'conversion' fails and you get an error.

Hope that makes sense.

Cheers,

Dave
