Subj:   Re: IDs datatypes for schema design

From:   David Roth

Leszek,

This numeric primary key (and system assigned key) concept is pervasive in the industry with certain tool/rdbms vendors, especially relating to dimensional and star schema modeling (Kimball).

This really drives to physical implementation to support less perfomant databases. Since Teradata does not have this performance problem joining tables using real data, NCR's recommendation is always to use true business data for your primary keys and indexes, hence the recommendation to use varchar.

Regards,

Dave
