Yes, you're right, it's a cost estimate, and I've always used it that way, it's just it's expressed in time units (minutes, seconds or
hours). I don't expect it to relate to absolute query time. But when the EXPLAIN lacks a cost estimate, I always assummed that meant that
the optimizer couldn't figure it out, but I don't know the rules for when it can and when it can't estimate costs. Anyway, I sure wish
someone would address that.
