Claudia, You're correct that Teradata may refuse to allow you to re-use the same password (if you've got that feature enabled), but that's the drawback of taking the simple approach. The only real alternative is to cycle round a series of passwords, but then you have to remember to keep your batch scripts etc up to date, which kind of negates the reason for doing this stuff. I have in the past updated the system tables directly which avoids that problem, but as pointed out before in this email thread, NCR DO NOT support direct updates of this kind.
