I tried to run the query:

     sel characters( OREPLACE( 'my sql containing $$VALUEPAIRSTRING and other
     sql;','$$VALUEPAIRSTRING',   rpad('',10000,'abc') ))

The result was: 10 033, so oReplace seems to be innocent...
