It could be a RAM issue since 1 GB is not really enough for the image. And it does not mean that your image hang; I would say that it is most likely swapping the content (check the state of your disk and if it is busy) which leads to a tremendous performance decrease.

For the TD 14 express with 40 GB it's recommend to apply at least 2.5 GB of RAM. I think the same amount of RAM would be applicable to the 13.10 Image However if you have only about 4 GB Ram available you might also end up in swapping the content of the Image. Make sure that your CPU is able to handle 64bit OS (see the link below) but I think this might be no issue otherwise the image would not even start.

RAM is not really expensive anymore and I personally have 16 GB in my notebook just to make sure that I can run at least 2 or 3 images at the same time without having the images swapping around.
