Subj:   Re: Compression Process on Teradata 13.10

From:   Gregg, William

Hi IV -- Sorry to hear that.

I stand by the 50% reduction in footprint using v13.10 vs. no MVC.

Findings:

1) Varchar and fixed char compression are responsible for comparable contributions to the final compression outcomes

2) It's fast too. MVC analysis and installation for a 200 gb table during the business day (no outage) is around 3 min.

No 1TB tables around here. However, I suspect that the 80-20 rule which is behind dictionary compression, works for 1 TB tables also.

Maybe U have too many secondary indices? My understanding is that NUSIs do not compress.

Good Luck.

Bill Gregg, Teradata DBA, GE
