It depends on your issue, whether the issue is with your Viewpoint Portlet/Data Collectors/Services you can follow the different ways to find out the root cause as I mentioned below.

Come to different portlet failures..usually most of the portlet failures are apparent via the message displayed by red triangle. Some of the portlets, like 'System Health' portlet shows "NO DATA" or "UKNOWN" when its unable to get the information from the concern data collector. Some features like, Rewind feature is another won't show up the right information and have a conflict with DBQL. etc.

Data Collectors: As we have so many data collectors, here I am giving you an example with "System Stats" data collector. Generally you will set sample rates under 'TeradataSystem > Monitor Rates'. But due to some bugs in VP 13.11, I didn't see the expected system stats. May be there are several other issues with different data collectors, but usually this is the way you can see cause.

Services: Sometimes the issue may be with the services. There are different services (shown below) for individual purpose. Sometimes one of the services may goes down when the viewpoint cannot display the updated information.

1) Viewpoint Service

2) DCS service

3) TMSMONITOR service

4) TDACTIVEMQ service

5) CAMALERT service

So make sure to check all the services are up and running by executing the command:

     " /opt/teradata/viewpoint/bin/vp-control.sh status'

If you find any of the services are not running, try to restart by using below command

     " /opt/teradata/viewpoint/bin/vp-control.sh restart'.

Also you need to check portal main logging using

     "/var/opt/teradata/viewpoint/logs # tail -f viewpoint.log"

-- here you can search for any buzz words like 'restart/fail/error etc'

Other logs that can be examined will be located at

     /var/opt/teradata/viewpoint/logs

-- in certain cases you need to send the logs to GSC, for ex: catalina.out

HTH!
