Subj:   Re: ViewPoint Vs Teradata Multi Sytem Manger

From:   Coutts, Mike

Viewpoint (note correct capitalization) is the primary Monitoring and Management tool for your Teradata systems. It consist of two primary components namely the Data Collection Service (DCS) which periodically collects performance and management data from your Teradata systems, which it caches in a repository within the Viewpoint server, this cache is then use by the viewpoint Portal and it's associated Portlets to allow a wide range of users (DBA, End Users) to see the status of Teradata systems, individual queries etc. A range of Management activities such as the definition of TASM Workloads can also be done through the Portlets hosted within the Viewpoint Portal.

Teradata Multi-System Manager (TMSM) is designed to Monitor the eco-system that surrounds your Teradata systems, such as load servers, BI servers etc.

TMSM receives data from all TMSM instrumented applications within your eco-system and allows the user to build up a picture of all of the processes and applications that exist within the eco-system. TMSM runs in a separate server to Viewpoint although it employs Portlets to present all of it's capabilities to the end user so there is a single Portal uses for all Operational Monitoring and Management activities.
