All right, mystery solved.

We had some problems with backups that night - it hung and was killed by an automatic procedure at 3am.

Release mload started at midnight and lasted until 3am. In other words, at the moment the hung backup job was killed, release mload could obtain an exclusive lock on the table and did what it was supposed to.
