While we haven't been using Identity columns for a lot of tables, we do use them in our QA environment, and they've worked fine. The only time
we've found problems like you describe occurring is when some loads records INCLUDING the identity column, which have numbers beyond those that
have been generated by inserting records WITHOUT the identity column. This can happen when a new copy of the table is created, and records loaded
into that copy.
