Subj:   Re: Pros and Cons of Stored Procedures

From:   Dempsey, Mike

Stored Procedures have many advantages for OTHER vendor databases. On Teradata they do have some advantages (encapsulation of business logic) but for most of the other benefits you refer to you should use Macros.

Macros are similar to Stored Procedures in that they encapsulate the SQL and are executed by simply 'EXEC macroname(parameters)' but they do not have the rich procedural logic of stored procedures.

Procedural logic is not usually a good thing with Teradata. Teradata is a parallel database - procedural logic is often sequential and should, in most cases, be avoided.

The Teradata documentation has a lot of good information on Macros and procedures.
