 It should not corrupt the data. There were tech alerts out that in very specific cases, under specific patch releases (older 6.2 I think, an alter table could corrupt the
data.  But obviously anything that corrupts data is a bug.  The fix is available, if you're on a software release with that bug, you should be
doing a patch upgrade.
