True. Without them my only guess was that something goes wrong when Unicode literals are used, like in col1 = ' '. If col1 is not Unicode (and
' ' is!), then maybe the optimizer thinks the JI is of no use.
Data types in CASE statements are always to be watched carefully. Does this sound like a possibility, Clay?
