Teradata DE is nothing but a Teradata box with a slight difference in architecture to make the box biased towards query usage. Typically it is a much smaller environment where data used in reporting or querying is pushed. DEs are not considered to be very efficient for large scale loading, but the box can be tuned to handle loads as well as querying. The DEs create a separate environment for querying. The idea is to have a dedicated environment for your users to run their queries away from a shared environment.
