Subj:   Re: IDLE and RESPONDING sessions for Cognos Users

From:   Joerg Mutsch

Hi Wayne,

frist of all: please refer to the UDA error which have been reported earlier this week. Cognos is supporting TD V12 starting from 8.3 SP2. Any earlier Version of Cognos might have some issues on TD V12.

Now to your question:

Every request to the database is opening a new Session on Teradata. Regardless if it is a prompt which request a subset from a table or a SQL of your report.

This means qach query will cause a new session to be established. The session will only be reused after a period of inactivity. The default setting is 900s which can be found CQEconfig.xml. But be aware that if you maintain this file you will have no further support of Cognos unless it is done by someone of Cognos or the Cognos support explicitly advice you to change the value.

But you can play with the values (after changing you need to restart the Cognos Services)

NOTE: The Poolsize defines the number of connections. Please check the Log files since they report if a cleanup of the connection will be made. If the File not exists search for CQEconfig.xml.sample. In this case you need to change the name (better copy) to the name as shown above.

ONCE AGAIN: Taking actions in this file might cause issues if not handle with care.

I hope this helps.

Regards

Joerg
