Subj:   Re: Syntax - Diagnostic Stats

From:   Becker, Donna

Diagnostic Helpstats on for session; <enter>

Every explain after this is run will have recommendations for statistics that are currently missing.

Simple guidelines are: collect on missing NUPIs, small table UPIs and single column statistics. Rerun the explain to determine if you fixed the problem. If not, run multi-column stats recommendations one at a time, starting with the high confidence recommendations first. Remove multi-column stats that don't work. Work your way through them till you've resolved the problem.

It's important not to collect on too many stats, as you could be consuming resources unnecessarily. Remember to put the new recommendations in the "regularly run" stats jobs, if not recollecting at the table level regularly.
