From:   Leslie, Quincy

I know SRDF has the "snapshot" feature and is a feature of EMC, is it not, but it also runs under SANS. Since TD does not use a SAN, of course, the SRDF would not function on a TD site.

TD has three related features and a peripheral: Fallback, Failover, and RAID, plus the ARC tape archive facility. What is the purpose or goal related to the backup? That may be part of your solution.

Failover is a powerful feature, in case loss of drives occur. Many years ago a huge TD site lost hundreds of drives, as the new drives MTBF was around 5-10 hours (bad solder joints) and all the new drives went bad as fast as they could be installed. That site had "failover", so all the data was in effect backed up on multiple drives and that truly saved them.

Tape is pokey, so performance is an issue.

Finally, TD has Parallel Transport included with TTU V12, which could be used as a form of realtime backup, onto another TD servers.

So the question is, what is your issue to resolve.
