In the past, I used a tool called CNSTERM to obtain some XDBW functionality through the putty connection.
This tool is a non-graphic version of XDBW and, once my putty software was only able to emulate non-graphic terminals, it helped me a lot sometimes!
I am not sure if CNSTERM tool is still available. Try to find some references at Utilities manual to get instructions on how to use it!
