CHAR(1) would be a faster way toward ANSI Compliance as the BYTEINT data type is an extension to the ANSI standard.

DECIMAL(1,0) would be ANSI compliant and require the same amount of space as either BYTEINT or CHAR(1).

I would opt for DECIMAL(1,0) myself. I have yet to be convinced of a reason to store a number as a character in a database.
