Martin,

Have you already experimented with the character set options in the ODBC data source configuration?

If not, you could open the ODBC Administrator on a client PC and add the character set to User Data Source configuration. It will become the default character set for all sessions using the Data Source but check whether this is indeed the case with your application.

If you require multiple defaults you can set up multiple ODBC sources and use them depending on the needs of the application. I don't know whether you prefer to manage multiple ODBC configurations (they are just registry entries which you can propagate to users by SMS or similar network management tools) to multiple DB users but thought it might be worth mentioning.
