Bob;

I would have gone straight to:

     select a.* from   ONE_BIGTABLE a
     MINUS
     select b.* from ANOTHER_BIGTABLE b;

Unfortunately I don't have the ability right now to try this on a system and see what the explain would say. Maybe you'd want to take a looke?

Just a thought... (DOH! Wish I was going to see the Simpsons Movie!)
