Subj:   Local time vs. UTC time

From:   Anantaraman, Kumaran

The function CURRENT_TIME is described as 'Returns the current system time and current session Time Zone displacement.'

1) What does 'system' here mean? Just that it is the time maintained and reported by the Teradata system?

2) Bigger question : What time (local vs. UTC) does the system time represent? I assume it should be UTC time, that way, it is independent of the changing DST offsets. At places where I have worked, the system time seems to store a local time, like the EST time. Would like to know what other installations do and what is the best practice.

>From documentation "All TIME and TIMESTAMP data is associated with Time Zones either explicitly or implicitly.

A Time Zone is represented by a signed displacement from Universal Coordinated Time (UTC). All TIME and TIMESTAMP values are stored internally as UTC."
