Subj:   Re: Scan the whole tape to restore the small table

From:   Bergman, Ysbrand

Hi,

NetVault will use the arc catalog that contains positioning information. Using this information it will position the tape to the right locations. 2 notes:

- Since this information is stored inside Teradata, you will normally not be able to use the positioning information when copying to a different Teradata footprint

- Do NO use the arc catalog when restoring the entire archive, the additional overhead will slow your restore down; after every database object, we will query the catalog for positioning information and execute a seek (which essentially destroys are read ahead buffer). This is especially noticeable with a large number of small objects.

Teradata backup solutions based on TSM or NetBackup do NOT support fast positioning, this implies that they will need to read the entire archive from the beginning.

Regards

Ysbrand
