I believe the problem in both cases is that you have to uninstall the TUF6.2 level of the driver before you install TTU8.1 level, and some TUF6.x driver versions have an overzealous uninstall.

Our workaround was to write a custom script to delete a few key files and registry entries instead of doing uninstall. I can't find a copy of a script, but IIRC it was loosely based on a Teradata support knowledge article...
