The term has become a little fuzzy. Historically non-TPA nodes were physically identical to the TPA (database) nodes, managed by the AWS as part of the same cluster, connected via BYNET, just not configured to run the database (used to run applications instead).

Today with Gigabit ethernet, there is probably little or no performance gain from BYNET connectivity for most applications. There may be some operational simplicity in having your application nodes be part of the same managed cluster - but be aware that managed enterprise server nodes cost significantly more than commodity servers.
