What format are you using for the EXPORT file? In REPORT format, BTEQ will use "field mode" to translate each column to character form, then try to format each row into a printable line.

If you EXPORT DATA, the results will include newlines embedded in the text column - but rows will be in FastLoad format, i.e. with binary record length added at the front and trailing record delimiter (newline); also binary field length immediately before each variable-length field.

You might also consider using FastExport with FORMAT TEXT (or UNFORMAT).
